Woman sleeping peacefully in cool, breathable white bedding

100% Bamboo vs 100% Cotton Bedding for Hot Sleepers

If you sleep hot, both of our bedding materials are natural, breathable choices, but they feel and behave differently. Our 100% bamboo bedding is silky-soft, absorbent and moisture-wicking, and helps regulate your body temperature – a good fit if you tend to wake up feeling clammy. Our 100% cotton bedding has a smooth, crisp percale weave with a matt finish, is easy to care for and costs less, with complete sets from £39.99 compared with £67.99 for bamboo. Whichever you choose, pairing it with a lighter tog duvet will make the biggest difference to how cool you stay.

How they feel

Bamboo: Our 100% bamboo fabric is silky-soft. In terms of feel, it sits somewhere between the freshness of cotton and the softness of silk.

Cotton: Our 100% pure cotton percale fabric is smooth and crisp to the touch with a matt finish. It becomes softer with each wash.

If you like a silky, smooth sheet, bamboo is likely to suit you. If you prefer a crisp, cool-to-the-touch feel, cotton percale is a lovely choice.

Breathability and temperature

Bamboo fabric is often described as cool and breathable. Ours is absorbent and moisture-wicking, which means it draws moisture away from your skin, and it helps regulate your body temperature whilst you sleep.

Cotton percale is also known for being breathable, and our cotton sets offer high levels of comfort and breathability, making them a year-round favourite with our customers.

One honest point worth knowing: bamboo is very good at maintaining body temperature, but it only conducts heat – it doesn't generate it. That means your duvet does a lot of the work. If you want to stay cool, use a very light tog inner duvet; if you want to stay warm in winter, choose a heavier tog. The same advice applies to cotton.

Care

100% bamboo needs a little more care. Wash it with a non-biological detergent only, at any temperature up to 40°C – cold, 20°C, 30°C or 40°C washes all work. Never use a biological detergent, as the enzymes in it break down the bamboo fibres and damage the fabric, and avoid hot washes above 40°C, which can strip the fabric of its natural properties and shorten its life. Line dry where possible, or tumble dry on a low heat. Natural bamboo also shrinks a little over the first few washes, so we make our bamboo sets slightly larger than standard to allow for this. Read more in how to wash bamboo bed sheets.

100% cotton is easy care: we recommend machine washing at 40°C, but it can also be hot washed when needed. Air dry or tumble dry on a low heat, and iron whilst damp for the crispest finish.

Which one suits you?

Choose 100% bamboo if you often wake up warm or sweaty, you love a silky-soft feel, or you have a deeper mattress – our bamboo sets include a deep fitted sheet made for mattresses 30–40cm deep. Our bamboo is odour-resistant — a soft, smooth choice many people with sensitive skin prefer.

Choose 100% cotton if you like crisp, fresh sheets, want bedding that's simple to wash and iron, or you're looking for a complete set at a lower price. It's a good all-rounder for warm and cooler months alike.

Frequently asked questions

Is bamboo or cotton better for night sweats?
Both are breathable. Our bamboo is absorbent and moisture-wicking, so if dampness is your main problem, bamboo is the one we'd suggest trying first – paired with a light tog duvet.

Will bamboo sheets keep me cool on their own?
Not on their own. Bamboo helps regulate temperature, but it doesn't generate heat, so your duvet's tog matters too. A light tog duvet will keep you cooler. On those really hot summer nights, consider removing the inner duvet altogether and just sleeping under the bamboo duvet cover on its own.

Which is easier to look after?
100% cotton, slightly. Both can be washed at temperatures up to 40°C. Cotton is recommended at 40°C but can also be hot washed when needed, and it can be ironed whilst damp for a crisp finish. Bamboo must be washed with a non-biological detergent only (never biological, as its enzymes break down the bamboo fibres), at a maximum of 40°C, and needs gentler drying – line dry where possible, or tumble dry on a low heat.

Do both come as complete sets?
Yes. Both come as complete sets: a duvet cover, a fitted sheet and two pillowcases, in Single, Double, King Size and Super King. Our 100% bamboo range is also available as separates, so you can buy a duvet cover, fitted sheet or pillowcases on their own, and you can top up on extra 100% cotton pillowcases too.
